To turn watch-from-anywhere on, your Jellyfin server runs on a Windows PC with Navarre for Windows installed on that same PC. If your server lives on a NAS, Mac, or Linux box, the Navarre apps still play everything on your home network, but remote cannot be switched on yet - NAS support is next on the roadmap. Away-from-home playback runs on the phone app and on a paired Windows laptop; Android TV plays on your home network.

At home, nothing is involved: your devices talk straight to your server, free, and always will. When you switch on watch-from-anywhere, Navarre publishes your Jellyfin server on the internet at a public HTTPS web address, using your own Tailscale account - no port forwarding, no reverse proxy, and no router surgery. The connection is encrypted end to end and we do not advertise the address anywhere, but it is not a secret either (addresses like it appear in the public certificate logs that cover every HTTPS site), so the passwords on your Jellyfin accounts are what keep other people out - which is why Navarre refuses to switch remote on while any enabled account on your server has no password. Pair a device once with a code and your library travels with you. We do the setup so you never see a config file, and you can switch it back off from the same screen.
No. Your stream travels encrypted from your server to your device; Navarre's servers handle your purchase and pairing, never your media. At home it is a direct hop on your own network. Away from home it reaches you through Tailscale's public ingress, which routes the encrypted stream without being able to read it - that shared ingress is also why away-from-home quality is capped below your home upload speed.

At home: nothing. Watching on your own network needs no Navarre account and never waits on our servers. Remote runs over your own Tailscale account on your own hardware - we hold no key that could switch it off - so devices you have already paired keep streaming. What would stop: new purchases, new sign-ins, and pairing new devices; and if your tunnel ever dropped, the app could not switch it back on without us. Your media stays in your files, in open formats.
Navarre's app is our own code, built on the open Jellyfin ecosystem. Your library and files stay in open formats on your server - run Navarre alongside any other Jellyfin client, or drop it any time. No lock-in is the promise; owning our code is how a polished app stays a one-time price.
The unlock is one-time, per household, forever. It never converts to a subscription, and what you bought stays bought. If running costs ever force a premium extra (like a full-speed relay), it will be an optional add-on - never a paywall on what you already own.
